Cairn // vol. 3: Library Adventures, New Projects, More Architecture
See? I'm getting better at this. This is the second week in a row! Crazy, right? This week has been really exciting for me, but it hasn't been without its share of bad news. On Tuesday I found out that a colleague and fellow Des Moines creative was involved in a serious motorcycle crash. On happier notes, I've signed two new projects, went to the library, and have been indulging more into this little crush on architecture I can't seem to shake.
PAIGE KLECKNER
Last weekend Paige was involved in a motorcycle accident and is currently in the ICU at a Palm Springs, CA hospital. Paige serves as a graphic designer with 818 — a tiny design empire, and as a local photographer. Paige is a passionate, adventurous woman, loyal and reliable. 818 is hosting a silent auction to raise money for her medical expenses, as her recovery will be long. This event will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at the Iowa Taproom from 6pm – 9pm. Come out and support Paige and the 818 family as they endure a challenging time. You can also support Paige financially by donating to a GoFundMe set up to alleviate the financial burden. #WeGotYou, Paige!
STILL OBSESSING OVER BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE
You know when you learn something that just blows your mind, and you're hopelessly captivated by this new discovery? That's what I experienced when I discovered the connection between design and architecture. Feeding this little crush of mine, I went to the library on Monday and checked out some books about poster design, and architecture from my favorite period, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. I'm excited to look at those and find some new inspiration.
In addition, I've been watching Abstract, the design documentary on Netflix. I recently watched the episode on architecture, which focused on Danish architect, Bjarke Ingels. His work seems to push some boundaries and break rules, but he said, "What would Copenhagen look like if everyone followed the rules?" Nothing would change, and there would be nothing new. It was such a powerful insight to my work as a creative. I find myself playing it safe, playing by the rules. I couldn't help but ask myself, what would the design landscape look like if everyone followed the rules, if everyone played it safe?
NEW PROJECTS
This week I had the opportunity to make some headshots for a client, Jenny, who is starting her own business. After that, I will be working with her to update her website, logo, and business card. She works in healthcare, and I've wanted to work with people working in health and wellness. This will be my first consulting job, so that exciting, as well. I look forward to working with Jenny on this, and in the future.
Earlier today, my friend Katrina, who I know from Lexington, called me up and asked if I would help her with her logo, so that will be fun. I did some work on her logo last year and she's not only a good client, she's a good friend. Katrina is the kind of person who is always genuine. She loves people well wherever she goes!
That's all for this week! Next week is going to be packed! I look forward to sharing with you!
happy trails,
